DSM

The Department of Solid Mechanics follows and cultivates the full range of research topics in Engineering Science and Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in which Solid Mechanics is involved. This includes, in particular, Fluid-Structure-Interaction problems, coupled problems in Mechano-X (mechano-chemistry, mechano-biology, coupling between elasticity and electromagnetism...), mechanics of advanced materials and active matter, etc.

The Department is meant as a meeting place and collaborative space for researchers coming from a wide range of universities and research centers, starting form those located in the North-East of Italy, central Italy, and the Italian Technical Universities. The scientific coordinator is selected on a yearly basis from these universities. 
The scientific coordinator for the academic year 2026-27 is prof. Eric Puntel form the University of Udine.

The opening event for the activities of the Department has been the international workshop "Trends in Continuum Mechanics", an international workshop celebrating the 85th birthday of Paolo Podio-Guidugli and his longstanding contributions to continuum mechanics and applied mathematics. The workshop was held at CISM on May 14-15, 2026.
